I'm still planting lettuces, chard, turnips, beetroot and cabbage. Also early carrots. Time will tell whether that's a good idea or not!
Soon it will be time to sow broad beans to overwinter and you can plant garlic too.

:? I know about overwintering broad beans but what about onions. Someone has suggested sowing omion seeds now for next year. Has anyone any experience of this and what varieties should I try?

Onion sets can be planted noe for an early summer crop. I grow radar and senchu. They seem to do well if planted now up to the middle of October. Makes you feel better knowing that something's growing, not just bare ground!
