Is this a crazy, pointless idea?
« on: May 20, 2012, 13:22 »
Here is a picture of the raised bed I grow carrots in:

I think I've sown the carrots too deep but that's irrevelant. There appears to be a ton of all sorts of things growing in here, including the never ending horsetail.

After the growing season, would it be feasible to dig the entire thing out to a depth of 1.5 meters (which I heard is the depth horsetail gets down to) and dump a load of fresh compost in it?

The cost/manpower isn't the issue for me here - but if in a few years time I would end up in the same situation I am now due to relentless weed germination carried onto the bed via wind I feel it would be pretty pointless.

Mare's (horse) tail can go down much deeper than that. The roots have been found in coal mines.

Even if you dug down that far, there's nothing to stop it coming in for a side attack.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm really not sure about this idea. I suspect it's Chinese whispers because fossil horsetails are sometimes found in coal. Certainly googling doesn't seem to throw up any depths beyond 2 or 3 metres...

There appears to be a gap in the wall (bottom right hand corner) are you hoping the mare will bolt taking its tail with it !      I have raised beds and I feel nervous/anxious when my compost is that far below the edges ! ! !

Seriously though.  .  . I agree with D.D. the only thing you can do is restrict the growth of mare's tail.  The other weeds - just keep swinging that hoe.

Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !
