Plastic bottle cloches
« on: May 19, 2012, 21:17 »
Hi
I asked before about using plastic 2 litre bottles as mini cloches and you all gave some brilliant advice. We've got a nice healthy crop of plastic bottles on our allotment now-over our brassicas. However, they have loads of condensation inside them and on some of the plants, the outer leaves are turning yellow. We have used three quarters of the bottle and kept the lids off. Are the plants too warm? That would be hard to believe in the recent weeks..!
And as the forecast is to get warmer-should we cut the bottles to make protective sleeves that should still keep birds and pests off but would give more air?
Thanks again
Wendy

I only use them with both ends cut off to make a sleeve.
It's mainly to stop the wind stressing the seedlings, rather than to warm them up.

Not to say that leaving the top of the bottle on is wrong.  I just don't do it.

Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

I wouldn't use them over brassicas unless the brassicas weren't hardened off sufficiently. Brassicas are hardy plants that don't like heat.
