Growing new crops.
« on: May 19, 2012, 20:46 »
After 20 years in crop and variety research I didn't think there were many crops I have not grown.....so this year I am growing several new crops - all from seed, many of which produced or foraged myself:
Melon
Celeriac
Gooseberry
Fennel
Horseradish
Burdock
Perpetual spinach
Jerusalem artichokes

Should be fun learning............what are you growing for the first time this season?
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......

melon: 2 different varieties.
tomato: yes, first time. 4 different varieties.
cucumber: the outside version. 2 varieties.
chard: 2 varieties.

And I am trying out many new varieties of stuff grown before. So often it is still all quite a new experience.

I live quite far up north, so growing a melon or a tomato is maybe more of a challenge than it seems at first sight. Especially because I don't have a greenhouse. Some trees still don't have their leaves here. It has just been spring for a couple of weeks. So I am testing out varieties that should be suited for northern climates. And am keeping my fingers crossed.
