Chitting

Ok - idiotic question - when you chit a seed, is it the root or the shoot that pops out first?? I've just planted a bunch of chitted bean seeds, assuming that the wiggly white thing that popped out was the shoot...have I just put them all in upside down???!

It's the radicle that emerges first I think - or at least the diagrams and books would have us believe it but not sure all bean seeds know this.

The radicle is the embryonic root and next the shoot and seed leaves grow.

I wouldn't fuss too much about which way up you've plonkend them... they will turn themselves around the right way no matter how much we try to help.  ;)

Mind you not all types of beans develop in the same way.... just to cause confusion.  ::)

All beans produce the root first.

Runner beans send up a shoot with 2 leaves.

French beans send up a shoot with the two halves of the bean attached and the first two leaves then unfold from between them.

It looks as if it's all a matter of what your proteins are like. How's yours?  ;)
