clubroot or what?
« on: November 01, 2007, 10:37 »
When my friends and I took on the plot last year, they soon discovered there were clubroot problems but I had opted for summer fruiting veg so was lucky.  This year I was a bit wary and made sure the beds were well prepared and limed.  Brocolli were potted on into bigger pots before transferring them, and I even sowed the swedes in peat pots before planting out!  Most of them have done well and overall I am very pleased.

However this weekend I dug a swede up to take home, and although it is a solid healthy veg, the roots have little cream like nodules on them.  I have tried searching & looking up clubroot, but any information or photographs I see are when the root systems are beyond recognition.

Can anyone give advice?  Pity I can't download a photo so I could show everyone.  I was going to leave the swedes in the ground and harvest as and when, but now I'm wondering if I should dig up and store?  Does anyone else have similar?

IF you got  a Hessayon, you can compare, weevil and early clubroot can look similar. Former has maggots, later's not and usually rottening soft tissue.

Clubroot in radish and turnip can present itself as elongated, nodular extensions to root.

Damn & blast!  I thought I was doing too well to get away with it!  Thanks for the advice - I'll pull the rest up this weekend and try and store them and then give the bed a heavy dose of lime as suggested.  So I guess potatoes are out of the question next year ....

Would leaving them in the ground do any harm now though?

Wouldn't that contribute to spread of the disease?

I'm rather wondering what eating quality they make? That couldpossibly deteriorate as well?

I can't see though, why potatoes are out of question. :?

I was assuming that the damage had been done for this year (but I don't know that).

Potatoes are out of the question after a heavy liming (they'd get scab).

Bet your club root isn't as bad as my club root!

Try doing a search and you will find the swede threads.

You have my deepest sympathy.

I quite like a tall swede but I'm not so hot on the twisted and gnarled pointy ones.

wow nasturtium, compared to your swede, my crop (so far) is actually fine.  In fact, up till now totally blemish free and perfect.  I've never had better swedes before.

Knowing clubroot has already shown itself elsewhere on the plot, it was always going to be hit and miss of where else it could be.

We live and learn :)
