Well the chicks have grown and are now approaching 4 weeks old. I have some new pics. I think I have 1 to 3 cockerals in the group but am still unsure. Here are the pics below...

Cheers  :)

I'm 99% sure the sussex is a cockerel.

As for the Marans, for sure one is a cockerel, but I would also take bets on all three being male too...

sorry!

Your sussex looks different to mine which is now nearly five weeks. Your comb is more pronounced. I'll find a photo.

Your chicks are lovely. I have no ideas myself really I'm a total novice at sexing chicks and therefore of no help to you I'm afraid. I have this all to go through soon as my Pekin chicks are coming up for 2 weeks and I'm dreading it! I'll be watching your thread with interest, I hope you get at least one hen...fingers crossed  :)

Thanks for the replies :) I do have another load of eggs in the incubator so its not the end of the world just means I have to wait longer for freshly laid eggs. Anyhow a friend of mine near me had her cockerel eaten by Mr Fox so maybe I can pass 1 or 2 on and keep 1 or 2 for dinner but it would be nice to at least gain one chick from this experience. So i'll keep plumping them up and shall post some more pics in the next 2-3 weeks and see if theres any more tell tale signs. Anyhow maybe this helps others with this problem. Fingers crossed for more females on the next batch

All four would make good dinners.  You might find that the sussex is ready before the Marans, but both will take about 20 weeks to gain decent muscle if they are pure breeds.

nuzuki - I would plump for the white sussex being a cockerel and that 1 of the marans is too. I will keep fingers crossed for you that the other two are hens!

Jo57 - Looking at that picture I think Minnie's chick is a Georgie but again may well be wrong. Keep us filled in!

I have some updated pictures, I would say the light sussex and bigger greyish maran are cockerals. I have a feeling the other 2 could well be ladies :) Please let me know what you think....

I have a feeling these 2 are hens

I agree with you about the light sussex. Mine (same age)  looks much more hen like already, much smaller comb and much less upright stance. Not sure about the others.

Two have definately got larger combs, the Sussex and one of the Marans, than the other two. so if thats anything to go on I'd say two male and two female. Can't wait to see if thats what they are.  ::)
