Can you chit basil?
« on: May 12, 2012, 15:09 »
I'm a bit disappointed with my basil - the first batch are doing well though there are not many of them so I sowed some more but only four seedlings have come up.

Is it worth trying to chit some seeds and would you do this in an airing cupboard until they germinate in the same way as sweetcorn?

I'd love to have lots to harvest with my tomatoes!

Have to be honest and never had any trouble with Basil (apart from one batch suffering from dampening off when sown over the winter), usually have to dispose of half my seedlings.  :)

I'd imagine with the size of the seed it will be difficult to actually see if they've started to germinate if you chit the seeds. Don't know how you start your seeds off but one idea is once sown cover with a clear plastic bag or equivalent and then place in the airing cupboard to germinate. Shouldn't take too long to come through.

I've always found basil very straightforward too. I've already sown and grown two batches this year. They do need a bit of heat to germinate though. I do much the same as Galen. I just sprinkle a few seeds in a pot, cover with a bit of compost, give them a quick spritz with a water sprayer, cover the pot with a plastic bag and leave them on a worktop near the boiler where it's nice and warm. They're usually up within a few days and I get close to 100% germination.

I do the same but put mine in the heated propagator - it means I have to evict the cat for a few days  ::)  :)

i've tried to sow them but not had a good germinating yield and left over seem to have disappeared - can only guess there is a slug lurking somewhere .

what i have tried now is water the soil 1st then place a few seeds on top. i can see the seeds have turned an frosty white colour.

My basil all germinated fine a few weeks ago on the kitchen window sill in an unheated propagator, problem with mine is it all seems to have completely stopped growing at after I potted it on when it was about 2 inches tall, I moved it at the same time into the hallway which has less sun so this may be the problem.

The only thing I can think of is that many it wasn't warm enough for them to germinate, though obviously some didn't mind it! I think I'll try the airing cupboard.

Thanks, everyone.

It think it was definitely because they weren't warm enough - having moved them to a slightly sunnier spot and covered them with a plastic cloche I now have lots of seedlings that are hatching!

I don't know why these ones were different - the ones sown in March I had no problems with. Goes to show you how sensitive seeds can be!

Had you forgotten the really warm spell we had in March and haven't had since?!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
