Vanilla Pods
« on: May 11, 2012, 20:30 »
Does anyone know what can I do with 15 fresh vanilla pods ? I needed a couple for some wine and it was cheaper to buy in bulk  ::) Hate to waste the rest though.

 (Ignoring the fact I've never heard of it)

Google tells me just to stuff in jar and cover with sugar - Think I can just about manage that !

I'll swap with you. Vanilla pods for carrot cake? ;)

You could make a bread and butter pud using the vanilla seeds. Slit them in half longwise and scrape out the seeds. then put the empty pods in the sugar jar.

They will also keep for quite a while if you keep them in an airtight jar.

Whip some cream and caster sugar with the seeds and eat with fresh fruit.

Make a vanilla cheesecake :)

Careful I'll have your hand off making offers like that ! I feel the same way about carrot cake as I do sprout.  :tongue2:

Im not big fan of puddings or deserts really and Icecream is a big no go area, but Im guessing it the sugar would be very nice in my coffee.

Vanilla wine of course  ::) http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/reques92.asp

And there are sooooooo many different recipes for carrot cake tooooo :D

Thanks for the link to the vanilla wine recipe :)

OH used to make wine when we were younger but got a bit disheartened with the results. Also time factor when working :(

However now we are retired.............  I may float the idea. ;) Especially as he likes vanilla.

I do remember a stonkingly good parsnip and banana sautern he used to make.

You could freeze the remaining pods for the next time you make vanilla wine ;)

I've not tried this but whenever I flick through this particular recipe book it catches my eye  :)  Says is lovely to pour over rich fruit cakes or hot puds, or put into coffee and is simplicity itself.

Infuse 2 vanilla pods in 750ml brandy for 6 weeks.  Can then be used and topped up with fresh brandy to get the most out of the pods.

I see New Shoots has the measure of my culinary abilities  :D  I'll add a cheap bottle of brandy to the shopping next week.
