French beans in Belgium
« on: May 10, 2012, 16:48 »
Fellow gardeners,

I've have my French bean seeds planted in paper pots and they are now beginning to show their heads. How soon should I plant them out please (I'm worried about them getting all spindly (which I remember they become lanky very quickly)?

Thanks, but I mean how developed should the plant be, because they shoot up so fast. Should I wait for leaves to form?

I usually wait until there's a couple of pairs of leaves.  Make sure the plants are in decent light until they go out, and take time to harden them off outdoors gradually before planting out.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks, Yorkie, but I've just planted half of them in the mud bath which I call my allotment.  My paper pots are about jam jar size. I slightly ripped the bottom part of the pots and I saw a lot of roots were already pokling through the bottom, so I think it was time to put them out. It is 22 degrees out there (8 pm) so I think my greatest worry is the slugs.
