Percentage Of Hens
« on: May 10, 2012, 15:40 »
I just hatched out 21 chicks in my incubator (first time ever) :)

Can anybody who has used an incubator for the same tell me what the cock to hen ratio is?

I hatched Light Sussex and Rhode Island Red.

with most hatches you will get a ration of at least 50% -60% cockerels.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks - That's ok as long as it is no more.

I made a brooder box out of some 9" timber and one of them is almost able to clear the 9" to get out and the chick is only 2 days old.  How deep should my brooder box be?

I dont think they are pure bred, i just bought them off a young lad who had fertilised eggs for sale from good stock in paper.  Bought an incubater about 3 years back and never used it, never had time until now.....quite interesting thing to do.

For their bedding/litter i have 2 old towels which i read was a good idea but as you can imagine they are getting quite dirty now and have just got some shavings for their litter.  These shavings are pine but contain larch shavings.

Will the larch shavings be ok? as i read that some wood shavings like cedar is not good for chicks.

those percentages are just an average - some hatches have been known to be all female and others all male. This is a risk you take when hatching your own.
