Feeding crops??
« on: May 10, 2012, 14:23 »
Hi
We haven't much in yet-but should we be feeding crops yet? We haven't needed to water let alone feed but I thought I should check....Also, do you give seedlings a feed? We certainly have plenty of those...
Do different crops have to be fed differently or can you give a general feed weekly and then something like poultry manure pellets once or month for example or is it much more precise? I'm just worried that if and when we do get our crops in we'll have a complicated feeding routine to deal with.....!
Thanks
Wendy

"Additional" feeding will depend largely on the natural fertility of your particular soil, whether you manured it, and to some extent the weather.

My soil is at the sandy end of the spectrum of sand > loam > clay, and even with compost added it leaches nutrients rapidly, especially with all the rain we've had in the last month or so.

"Improved" clay soils are much more nutrient-retentive and will need less feeding - to some extent it's a matter of getting to know your soil and the requirements of individual crops; fertiliser is expensive and it's better to feed cautiously at first.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Additionally to what JayG has said, the only things I feed weekly are tomatoes once the first set of fruits has started to form.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
