I've no idea, other than they grow quite tall, (about 3'6"), which may not favour small areas. They are, however, quite sturdy and don't need a lot of support.

When I grew them as a seed guardian they had a higher yield than the others I grew, (about 60 pea seed returned for one sown as opposed to 40 for the other varieties), and they are very sweet, as others who have grown a few of my seed will bear out.

The HSL often name previously unknown varieties after the person they came from or an area, in this case it's the latter.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

On the local site, all the old boys sow dwarf peas so that may be why they went out of favour.

Personally I prefer taller peas, cos they're easier to pick and much kinder to my back :D

Given the cost of peas seed in a packet (no where sells loose pea seed by me).
Can I save seed from my Kelevden Wonder for next year?

To verify - yes you can.

Peas are self-pollinating within an enclosed flower, so there is very little risk of cross-pollination.

I've got over 300' of peas in this year.

Didn't pay a penny for the seed.

This is a cool and very informative chat. This year I am trying a heritage Irish variety called 'preans'. They are tall too - apparently can reach six foot. I only have a few seed, but all have germinated. The plants are very vigorous and healthy looking. They also seem to be resisting pea weevil damage (the meteor peas beside them are well nibbled). Hopefully I can get them to harvest, taste them and then save a few more for next year.

Should I just stop harvesting after a certain point in the plants cycle.

Thanks DD. Glad to read that I only need to allow about 10 plants to go to full maturity meaning I get to eat more than I thought.  :)

If I'm saving seed,I just let the end of one row mature. There's always some you've missed as well, so there's a few to give away for others to get addicted start their own collection.
