Time to eat!!
« on: May 09, 2012, 12:15 »
My lettuce is coming up great, all the lettuce i planted, cos and tom thumb have come up, and they have grown so well, i can star to eat them already, all grown outside (started on the windowsill, then the poly) there not massive, but big enough for a salad for 2 right now, considering the lack of sun, and the amount of rain we have had, its a good start
If Its Not Growing... Its Dead.

I had a lovely big box of lettuce but I needed room in one of the greenhouses so took it out and put it on the floor in front, I now have a big box of big fat orange slugs.

Cut them off then cut a cross in the stem, but you will get better results if you plant new seed every couple of weeks.

I was just thinking the other day how I hardly see a slug or snail in our garden, then this morning I saw two huge ones, one on the conservatory window and the other just by the car!  No doubt they have been making their way to my salad leave during the day!  I will set the chickens on them  :tongue2:

(they actually aren't keen on large snails)

I grow salad leaves in seed trays with at least two on the go at any one time.  I flipped one upside down the other day while watering it. Carnage    Good job I had one in reserve.  I cut them and they grow back and will last three cuts approx

Like QC I always try to have two trays on the go at home but only the loose leaf types, I take the bigger leaves as they grow but leave in the growing point so they do not stop dead.

At the lotty I sow the headed types and put in just a few every couple of weeks, I dot them around where ever there are spaces so they do not have a permanent bed.  With a few thousand seeds in each packet I do not find the need to try and keep the old plant.

For whole plants I love the cos types.  I'm also growing an Italian iceberg which is small but so crunchy and tasty.  I sowed these into a seed tray recently and they are already big enough to be planted out individually if we ever get a let up in the weather  :nowink:
