Cherry tree not well
« on: May 07, 2012, 11:51 »
Can anybody advise what is happening to my Morello cherry tree?   The tree started with blossom a few weeks ago, and this was this was mainly located at the ends of the branches.   However now the leaves are started to form, some of the branches are dying back.    The tree is probably 7 years old and has been a prolific cropper in previous years.  Please take a look at the photographs and offer any suggestions as to what is happening and a possible cure.

I'm queen of my own compost heap and I'm getting used to the smell.

Looks to me as though your blossom has been a victim to the frost.  You may not get as many cherries as expected this year, but apart from that I can't see anything else wrong with the tree.

Thanks Runwell steve, not sure it is frost damage - the dying off seems to be affecting the branches gradually and we haven't had frost for a while?

I can't quite tell from your photos, but do the leaves on the dying back branches have a slightly silvery sheen to them?

Silverleaf is a fungal disease that usually (but not always) gives this appearance, and makes whole branches die back.

Another way to see is to cut a thickish branch off (about 2cm or more) and see if there is a brownish stain inside.

I can't think of anything else it could be but will check the RHS website and get back to you

OK here is wht the RHS say, and it includes a photo but there is also a comment that there is something called false silver leaf, not bacteria, which does not have the brown stain inside the wood, that is caused through stressful conditions........

Hope that helps

Thanks Sunshineband but I dont recognise any of these symptons.   The leaves are not silver, they are drooping and dying off.   Dont know what it could be.
