Can we grow pumkins from the seeds of our halloween pumpkin

I have just made pumkin heads for with my kids and they want the seeds inside (or more to the point I do!) Would they grow and when should we plant them? Or am I much better off buying seeds in a packet.

Better off buying since cross-fertilisation is rife amongst the cucurbits.

for the price of them i wouldnt bother,they can cross pollinate with other squashes.but then again theres nowt to loose,the kids will enjoy it

Absolutely, nothing to lose, if you want it for carving, even less so.

Go for it.

I find them really expensive, where do you get yours from? Well, I think, 1-2 pounds for 4-6 seeds... :roll:

My bought seed plants failed this year and I tried again with seeds I saved from last years Halloween although as pointed out a risk, it grew true, but only produced a single large pumpkin, but most people seem to have a poor pumpkin year. So I would go for it.

Last year I grew gem squash from seeds taken from a supermarket bought squash. The plants were never truly happy, but I still got a few squashes so I thought a second generation gem squash may take off better so I kept some seed. I soon discovered that the bees had been here there and everywhere on the entire allotment site! Out of the 6 seeds I sowed, only 1 produced gem like squash, the others a mix of oblong (short squat marrow like) and orange skinned (pumpkin like) gem squash.

I'm slowly going through them in the cooking pot and not been in the least disappointed that none are like the original. I'm sure kids will find the 2nd generation "pumpkins" fascinating not to mention educational (from a biological point of view - the birds & the bees .....)

I have found the orange 'Jack 'O Lantern' type squash the worst for this trait, even producing orange pumpkins and orange marrows on the same plant.
