Potatoes in alley!!!
« on: May 05, 2012, 21:55 »
Really silly question, no I mean really silly, I decided to grow my potatoes in bags, problem is I have also decided to sell my house, I have to clear my patio, I understand that potatoes need earhting up and kept in the dark, but do they know if they are on my patio or in the alley way, i have seven bags with potatoes in and am considering re-homing them to the alley at the side of my house, does it make a difference :)

once they are above the final soil level they will need some direct sunlight each day, not permanent shade.

How many times do you earth up? I dont get that bit and at what point do I let them grow above the ground, we have awful weather here and I only put my chitted babies out in grow bags last weekend,

each time they show add more earth/compost until they are nearly at the top of the bag -just leave enough room for a good regular watering.....then let them grow. Add some feed now and again as you earth up ;)

If you're lucky you'll get spuds all the way from the bottom to the top  :)

This is what I have done in past but got advice on here recently to earth up around the growth in the bags, not over it. I'm thinking this might be why I only ever got spuds near the bottom
Of the containers in the past.

Having just taken our house off the market after three years, when we reduced the price four times till we were below the price we paid (despite new heating, kitchen and gutters/soffits etc) I would say don't panic and leave them till you get a viewing. We averaged three a year! (sold twice, but fell through both times for no particular reason)

Good luck, hope you do better than we did. :)

Oh Tosca, I believe what will be will be and it must be meant for you to stay were you are, but I kinda think too you cannot put your life on hold just because your selling a house, Just re-potted 70 Lavender Plants so I will have a job to hide them for a viewing hehe  :)
