What is this
« on: May 05, 2012, 15:19 »
I've been clearing beds on our new allotment and i've found this in what we think was the old herb bed.  There is rosemary, sage etc etc in there including loads of weeds.  There is also this plant/weed.....I'm not sure what it is.  Does anyone have any ideas???

What is the scale? These could be flat chive leaves or something much larger like crocosmia, for example..

It resembles the camassia but this one has serrated leaf edges where the camassia is smooth. My first glance said it was a yucca. They're extremely hardy and put out a very tall centre flower spike.

Perhaps foxtail lilly or red hot poker but both are a strange find in a herb bed. It'll be exciting to see what it turns out to be. Please post another photo when it's in full flower.

My yucca has smooth leaf edges and have never flowered when that small, so don't think it's that

Could be Eucomis or pineapple lilly, may be. Think we'll just have to wait and see how it develops. Looks interesting

We went to the allotment this afternoon to have another look at it after all of your suggestions.  We think it's a red hot poker because the head of the flower shoots looks very similar to the red hot poker head.

We have taken a picture of one of the heads to show it close up....It had been munched!!!!

That last picture looks like asparagus.

It doesn't seem to be the same as your first photo.

If it is a red hot poker we've found that ours harbours masses of snails and slugs.  :(

I have a red hot poker myself and I thought the leaves looked similar as the leaf edges are very finely serated in your picture. The leaf edges feel slightly rough due to this seration. The flower spike in your picture does look similar to asparagus but I think it's just because it is early stage. Mine are not in flower yet but I am in the pennines.
