The last of my 2011 potatoes..
« on: May 03, 2012, 16:19 »
I'm going to finish off the last of my 2011's crop of spuds tonight .. they've been kept under my floorboards & have kept quite well too..& all without the need for electricity. If I got my way I'd get on with excavating a small cellar down there.

What produce are you still eating from last summer & how did you keep them?

(jams & pickles don't count !)

What do you mean jam and pickles don't count

Frozen broad beans, borlotti  beans, butternut squash and celeriac, blackberries, the gooseberries don't count 'cos they were pick your own. Working on setting up some soft fruit this year.

Fresh we have just dug up the rest of the leeks which are trimmed, cleaned and in the fridge ready to be prepped and frozen or used fresh :)

Onions.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Frozen green and broad beans, chillies, sweetcorn, peppers, tomato pulp, stored garlic and elephant garlic (though it's getting rather leathery) and there's one spud left, probably eat it on Saturday....

3 onions left and runner beans, peas a few corn on the cobs some chopped cooking apples and have just discovered some parsnips and cauliflower for tomorrow roast.

Almost forgot  couple of tubs of tomato sauce and tubs of pumpkin soup. Oh, enough dried beans for about 3 meals.

I wish you would let me include my jams.  My chest freezer broke down last year and I made enough jam from the contents to see me through till 2020.

& Yorkie

What varieties did you grow? I am very keen on sorting out a proper productive seed to harvest regime for onions (..although I've a way to go yet) I also need to know what really keeps in the UK.

How/where did you store them?

Thanks for your replies.

Thank you all for your replies

The reason for excluding jams is because it's a product that will of course store but is not "stored produce"..if you get my meaning. Homemade jam is 1 great revelation I have had since growing my own - so much better than the stuff from the not-so-super markets.

The idea of storing veg over winter outside of a fridge freezer is an unknown thing in my (Urban English) family & so very new to me. I am relearning lost knowlegde that I'm sure my (countryside Irish) Grandparents knew all about and seeing what my (Southern French) in-laws do may not work under my floorboards in Brum. The book I have is from America where they have space to build stone Root Cellars...I know I'd be up for the high jump if I excavated the flower beds for such a thing & I'd be dodo-like very quickly if I took a spade under the floor boards.

...so I need real experiences (sucesses & failures) please.

still got about 10kg of potatoes to use and about 1kg of onions in the shed, last parsnip dug yesterday plus usual frozen veg, dried herbs, dried beans and pickled beetroot, jams etc. Talking of cellars - I recall a guy in Sheffield who became convinced we would be attacked by the Russians back in the late sixties - he dug a fall out shelter -- took the council months repairing his house and the ones each side after he went into care.

If we ever get some warmer weather, you could grow winter squash (not butternuts which need more heat so can be temperamental) I only used the last of mine a couple of weeks ago  ;)
The were stored in the spare bedroom and in a brick shed (frost-proof)
