Leggy tomato help!
« on: May 01, 2012, 18:20 »
Evening all,

My toms have sprouted and are getting leggy, I have built the stems up but they are again looking leggy.

Is this just lack of light? Any advice or help on this?

Lack of light is the most probable cause.

Where do you have them?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have a back porch where we keep the washer and they are on the windowsill in there (the boiler is in there also and gives out some heat with it been oil).

It does catch sun, the front of the house gets very little. My only other option would be to try them in a upstairs window perhaps?

Sounds like it might be too warm and not enough light. Also, when potting on, plant them deep and the stem will send out more roots plus they'll be that bit less leggier.

I've sown my toms in the unheated greenhouse this year and they are very small. Bags of light but it can get cold in there. I've ran out of windowsills in the house.

Mine are doing the same but still look better than the same ones put into an unheated greenhouse. I will need to repot them into full size pots soon and bury them up to their leaves to reduce the leggy-ness.

If I plant them, will they grow?

I did a trick suggested by MoS and lopped the top off mine and replanted. They've been a little shaky since, and have wilted a little, but look to be getting stronger again. I'm hoping they'll end up as just good healthy, toms.

the peas can be planted out once you harden them off- that'll give you a bit of space  ;)

The peas need not have been inside in the first place, especially at this time of year. If you're not careful you can end up with weak plants.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You could still have started them outside in whatever you're growing them inside!

Well I'll be picking up some compost tommorow so can re pot some stuff on, they all look healthy enough and are showing more leaves so will bury them up some more. The good thing is I have lots of windowsills so I'll have to get more sowing in.

I must say things are looking ok this year considering the weather. Lots of flowers on the strawberrys, potatoes showing, peas are in and doing OK ( first lot anyway), got some spring onions just sown.

It's all getting busy and I need to get busy with the 3 days off coming, please please please don't rain!!!

Will try and get some snaps at the weekend for you guys :)
