White stuff in soil
« on: October 29, 2007, 21:39 »
Ok, probably something everyone else knows about, but as I was digging today, I discovered a patch of soil that had lots of white stuff in it.  I can't say what it was like, as I've never seen anything like this before.  It was pervasive and was white patches going right down into the soil.

Can anyone enlighten me?
On the very steep learning curve of organic veg growing!!!!

If it is as WG pic then it's the vegetative part of a fungi, the toadstool or mushroom that forms is the fruiting body, I just usually dig it over and expose to the air and elements.

The action of mycelium on woody / cellulose waste is a major factor on their breakdown.  Much more effective than composting.

So I see it as a good thing.  It will be preventing nitrogen robbery by rotting cellulose / wood.

Thank you everyone. It would have taken me ages to find all that out through books etc.

No doubt there will be many more questions to come in the near future! And that's just with clearing the plot, just think what I'll be like when I eventually get around to planting something!
