How to start?
« on: May 01, 2012, 15:44 »
Good afternoon everyone,
I have received my allotment key today and I went to see the plot. It is inundated, water every where and with a lot of rubbish and weeds.
I do not know what to do. To start cleaning or to wait until everything is dry or to do something to help the water go out of my plot.
I will thank all the comments,
Thanks,
Ionkar

Hello and welcome to the site.

There's advice here on clearing a plot. ( I hope it will work the site is having an upgrade today)
http://www.allotment-garden.org/articles/Clearing_a_New_Allotment.php

Is your plot actually under water, or just very wet after the recent rain?

Hello Mumofstig,
My plot is under water everywhere. There are some strawberriy plants and a lot of weeds.
I will put a picture in here.
Thank you very much for the article, it will be really helpful.

if i where you i would clear the rubbish, then i think you will have to wait until the water sinks into the soil before doing anything - once the waters gone i would thoroughly dig the plot over adding lots of organic material

Perhaps clearing the rubbish may be the best thing to do as it is wet, and if you have some perhaps lay some tarpaulin over an area to halt the growth of the weeds.

Good luck and it is good fun after the intial big effort! After you taste your first crop you will be hooked!
It can't rain all the time.

Hi Ionka
Welcome to the site. First off take a few photos before you start then keep on taking them as you progress. This gives you the pleasure of seeing we're you have been. Keep a diary of what you do.
Do a little  at a time but do dig out them deep rooted weeds it will pay off in the long run. As you progress get some plants in sow some seeds this gives you a return for all your hard work. It does not have to be rushed cover a area with thick black plastic and leave till next season you will be surprised how affective this is. It also gives you time to go over the areas you have cleared for a second time you never get all the roots first time around. Just stick at it it's hard work but rewarding. Happy gardening
