mine were exactly the same. Tastey but small, very small... Watered them loads, planted oct last year. I think it is lack of nutriants in my soil.

I always harvest garlic planted in late autumn when the foliage begins to die or go yellow, this is usually june, are you saying that you waited until the foliage copletley died back before digging them out?

What type of garlic did you plant, supermarket or one from a plant nursery.

The supermarket varieties are usualy imported from warmer places, but nursery bulbs are specificaly for growing in this country, they are a cold weather variety.

Mine was dodo too, but I planted it in April - they (whoever they are) recommend planting in the autumn, because a freeze stimulates it to break up and form several cloves in a bulb - I got tiny bulbs with 2-3 cloves in each, but they did taste good.

I've just ordered some from Dobies to plant next month, so hopefully I'll get more than two dinners' worth next year!

My garlic did really well ...

... but I planted in Sept (I think) and harvested back in June/July.  I can't say they're huge, but they're good quality and a good flavour too.

Not sure what you did wrong, but it would be worth giving one or two a try to see if they're edible ...

I've just ordered the garlic lovers selection for next year ... I likes garlic ...

theres 2 main types of garlic
1 the soft neck type that needs a warm climate
2 the hard neck type (when you strip the cloves you have a hard stalk left down the middle of the bulb) this is the type that grows best in our climate.
they require the same soil conditions as onions (lots of manure dug in before planting and keep the weeds down, also an area that drains well (water logged soil in the winter slows them down) and full sun,
i grow mine through teram .
has anyone grew the elephant garlic type ?
theres some on ebay now
feed the soil not the plants
organicish

I`ve ordered some elephant garlic this ,I`ve eaten some but never grown it before
.   I usually plant from october whenever it is dry enough,I plant so that the top is only just covered and then keep a careful eye as they get dislodged by worms.
