Best Runner Beans
« on: April 27, 2012, 18:43 »
Gardening Which has published their best buys for Runner Beans which may be of interest.
White Lady, heaviest crop.
Red Flame, heavy crops.

Runner/ French Bean cross. Developed by Tozer of the UK. Look like Runner Beans but do not need pollinating as Runners do, so you could grow in a green house for a very early crop.
Moonlight, white flowers, and Firestorm, red flowers. Not as heavy a crop as the top two runners.

We don't like runner beans so we don't grow 'em. Thanks for the info though. :)

on the allotments last year the only beans that cropped really well were my neighbour's and they were Moonlight, I think every flower must have set, cos there were so many - he was supplying the site

No runner beans

We live for the runner bean season :)

We are growing whitelady 'cos it was recommended in the garden news and iit has white flowers so I can stick some extra plants in my white borders in the garden and they will fit in with my colour planting.

Thanks for the info. ;)

No runners for me this year either, most of last years (white lady) stayed on the plant and went to waste.

As for white lady being the best, you're all wrong  ::) get your laughing gear around some desiree, much higher yields, stringless and a much better bean flavour.

Didn't you make green bean chutney, green bean and courgette chutney and picallilli. ALways have to hide a few jars or OH doesn't leave me any. :(

What colour flowers do the Desiree have?

White flowered - I find the sparrow pull off the red just for poop and giggles.

Ive been growing white lady for three years and save the seed.
I always swap the seed with my Dad.
They are looking good in greenhouse at the mo.
I also grow scrarlet emperor that crop well but not as good as the white lady.
I make chutney/Piccalilli/soup with runner beans and just about to finish some beans in freezer from last year.

Last year was my first year of growing my own, and my friend bought me a Rocket Garden as a gift.  The runner bean plants that came with it were AMAZING... shame I can't remember the variety :(

This year I'm trying Kelvedon Marvel although I may just have to get some White Lady now!
