Broody box
« on: April 26, 2012, 08:18 »
I am buying three, day old cream legbars, am setting up a broody box and have a couple of questions.
I plan on using a plastic box.
Heat source - would a Brinsea ecoglow chick brooder be suitable for their needs?
Flooring- is it ok to use wood shaving on top of newspaper?
Many thanks for your advice,
Jane

At day old they will try to eat the shavings. Advise using newspaper with either a tea towel or kitchen towel on top. The towels on top are necessary as it will be slippy for them and can cause spraddle leg. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Thanks Sassy.
How long before they can go onto normal bedding?
Any experience with the Brinsea ecochick warmer?

Have you checked out how to tell the male and female apart at day old?  There are quite a few videos and pictures if you do a search for "cream legbar chicks autosexing".  I am presuming you will only want hens.   ;)
