« on: April 25, 2012, 18:40 »
Hi all :)

I am new to growing my own veg. I have a question. On some of my seed packets it says plant out when the chance of frost as gone. How will i know that?

Thankyou very much for your time and effort.

If you Google "last frost date UK" you will be able to find the long-term average for your area, but be aware that not only have the last few years not been at all "average" but that persistent below-average temperatures (day or night) can set back many tender summer crops almost beyond full recovery - best to be very conservative and not try to rush things.  :)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

We very often get a significant frost about 4th May and sometimes another around 16th May( St somethings day). -6C last year clobbered even peas.

Minor frosts can occur later.

You should be safe to plant out in the last week in May.

If you are right on the coast you may be safe earlier.

If you go for the 1st June Ryan you should be pretty safe.

As Salmo says watch out for the Ice Saint's days
Quote
The days run from May 11 to May 14 and this period of four days has a reputation for producing some unusually cold weather, so much so that many sheep farmers would avoid shearing their flocks until the end of this spell.
One old Yorkshire saying tells us: "He who shears his sheep before St Serviatus' Day loves the wool more than the sheep."

I was just thinking that Parttimer... however, the saying refers to the Mayberry bush and not the month...  :) When it flowers, you're safe.

Edit: I think it's the Hawthorne bush... someone else might know the proper name for it.
