Contrary to the weather forecasts
« on: April 23, 2012, 17:30 »
Forget the drought and hose pipe bans. It is obvious we are heading to a year full of rain and low temperatures. That seems to be the way the forecasts goes in recent years.

Following recent newspapers' suggestion on what to plant in a drought year, I have many cabbages planted out and now the rains just don't stop!

Now anyone has any suggestions of what to plant in a rainy year? Bear in mind the temperrature won't be great and the disease caused by dump.
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

I do not intend altering my sowing/planting plans from an average year. Some things will always do better than others and which do better depends on the type of season.

It is impossible to predict months ahead what the weather is going to do. If you try and guess you could well go the wrong way.

What I lose on the swings, I'll gain on the roundabouts. I'll carry on as normal and not lose sleep over it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I think that weather forecasts which pretend to be able to forecast beyond a few days with any sort of accuracy is the sort of gimmick that gives science a bad name, although at least some of them are prepared to admit that the accuracy may be less than 100%  ::)

DD is right, carry on as normal for the UK climate taking into account where you live - it makes no sense to start Gurgling "rice growing" on the strength of a long-range forecast!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

That could well be the next MetOffice warning message! :D :nowink:

this is why (explained simply) most weather sites are predicting coolish weather into May (including the met office)

We're investing in lots more cloches this year, as they can help both ends of the season, and through the winter as well hopefully.

And if you're right Bing, the plants will get their moisture from running down the sides of the glass or the plastic, but will have a relatively dry spot to grow in, which will collect what little sun you may think we're due!

It's all hit and miss, I don't want to see another Brussel for six months, but am damn sure we'll get some proper onions this year, not like last year...

Yes, last year was fairly disastrous for me too. The first time in living memory that even my courgettes were a dismal failure. But I did get a really good crop of onions :)

Saw a programme on sky about 2 months ago re long range weather forecast's. They stated that the weather is determined by sunspot's which on average take 4 day's to reach Earth and affect the weather. Now i know why my smartphone only give's me the next 4 day's forecast.
