Do I have time to start again from seed?
« on: April 22, 2012, 19:53 »
Hi all, so far the years been a bit of a disaster, germination rates have been terrible and the few seedlings I have are bent and leggy..I'm off to buy more seeds tomorrow, am looking at the usual suspects really, tomatos, cucumbers, leeks, cabbages, broccoli, sprouts, peppers, chillis, ect, if I start them off straightaway, they'll all catch up, won't they? is there anything I can't start off again? I've got a few windowsills, a unheated glass greenhouse and have a plastic walk in one on order-that will be going down the side, where its a lot sunnier and warmer...

You may be a bit late for the chillis and leeks - I think they need quite a long growing season.

I won't start tomatoes off for another couple of weeks anyway.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Bubble wrap the greenhouse to keep it warm if you haven't already done so. It helps loads. X

It is too late for chillis but not for leeks

Excellent, thanks all, will be off this morning to get more seeds, I did try and bubble wrap the glass greenhouse last winter, saved all the bubble wrap up we got through the post for about a year but could not get it to stick to the glass or the metal frame, (spent hours with tapes and blu tacks but its to damp in the greenhouse for anything to stick) i've been given a heater but its needs petrol or meths or something, not a driver so don't tend to have that around the house and to be honest my glass green house is only a half size one so theres no space to have a heater set up, can only just get through the door as it is!
Just wish this weather would sort itself out, its rained and hailed for about 10 days now, come on summer!

For goodness sake don't put those in your heater!

It'll no doubt need paraffin.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Last year I missed the sowing boat for leeks and bought some seedlings on ebay --- excellent plants well rooted and ready to pot up (not to put out on the plot, but to grow on for later)

99p for 20 I think I paid.

Pretty good leeks from them

I hope you don't think anybody on here is an expert  We just grow our own veg and some have more experience of doing that than others.
We can only voice an opinion and give advice based on that, in the hope that it helps  :)

As mumofstig said, it's not too late for leeks.  Just stick them in. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

You are an expert compared to me MoS along with the other high posted members that dish out the help and advice :)

My first post was meant tongue in cheek just in case it has not come across that way ;)
