Start doing it now, as soon as the shoots are showing earth them up until they are just covered with soil again.

Yes cover them completely but only with a thinnish layer of soil not inches thick.

I wish mine were showing   I am beginning to get potato angst. With all this rain and cold I hope that they haven't just rotted. It is only my second year of potatoes and last spring was so different  8)

Have you planted them in the airpots again Grubbypaws? :) Sorry if you've reported this elsewhere, I'm afraid I missed it if you have.  How long ago did you plant them?

Hi Argyllie,

Yes all the first and second earlies went into airpots about the 24th March. They had been packed flat over winter but were easy to reassemble.

When the weather was frosty I was pleased that they hadn't shown but now I am getting worried

Last spring was slightly warmer than this spring, remember it's still very cold at night so the soil won't be as warm as this time last year. Have patience. Last year I planted my first spuds in early Feb as the weather was good and I had the time, they started showing after 4 weeks. I took a chance and got away with it.

This year I didn't even think about getting mine in and only started planting them mid March., I've still got a few rows to get in. My first planted spuds this year are only just showing their heads, so a good 6 weeks from planting.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Mine went into the ground on 19th March and I earthed up the first earlies last weekend. They were about ten inches deep to start with.

TEN?
I do mine about 10cm.
1st earlies been in a month now, been showing for over a week now.
Maincrop showing now as well. I put them in on Good Friday. Just over a fortnight; thats pretty fast.
I dig a trech about 6" deep, then plant 10cm deep in the trench. I then put a covering of grass cuttings about a couple of inches deep over them. I let them put a decent bit above ground and then slowly fill in over the grass cuttings until I end up with my final mound. Seems to work ok.

I have started worrying again   We have a large colony of sparrows that love everything green. I have just noticed that they have stripped some of my raspberry canes of all their young leaves.

Could they also be attacking my potatoes as they appear ?
