I find that a little bit of root showing doesn't cause too much of a problem, I certainly wouln't trim them, although no that you've mentioned it it would be interesting to trim a small selection and see what happens. Please post your results next year though.

Yes, I just want to try it on one of them, to see what happens. And in fact only one of my seedlings has a big root, all the others either aren't showing at all or are showing by a couple of millimeters. But now that the question has occurred to me (i.e. why does the root fork) I'd really like to know the answer. The fact that when I did search I found so many different reasons given for parsnips forking makes me wonder how many of them are actually facts and how many are urban myth. And now that I think I may have found an effective solution to my ongoing mouse problem, there's even a possibility that I might get to eat some of them this year :)

The main reason for them forking is because they hit an obstacle. Could be a stone, a lump of clay or compost, etc. That's why the people who grow them for show use a finely sifted compost to make certain there is nothing to stop the root going straight down.

Some veg, like parsnips, don't really like being transplanted and will misbehave unless you're very careful about it.

Far to much faff for me vegetables are for eating not comparing who's got the biggest.

Totally agree, I've only got limited space so try to ensure everything "works", was just trying to help out shokkyy with his original post and the tap root problem  :)

That's ok bazh, didn't think you were. :) Should say the only real faffing I do is with parsnips, peas and sweetcorn but have found it intrigues my 6 year old daughter who likes filling the loo rolls, chitting seeds (where needed) and making "big" holes for the parsnips to go

I know the shame DD, but I only have to deal with a grand total of 48ft once all plantings are made  :D
