Will my seeds germinate with all this rain?
« on: April 19, 2012, 20:40 »
Only last weekend I sowed carrots and parsnips and covered with enviromesh. It has been raining all day everyday for a week. Do you think the seeds will rot?

If you soil is reasonably well drained and has warmed up a bit from March the should be ok

Only had my plot for twelve months. I can remember waiting for my first carrots they seemed to have take forever.

Be patient! It'll happen.

It's not helpful, and neither are the rather low temperatures for the time of year, but it's probably better than being dried and fried!

Don't panic (yet!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

The enviromesh will have protected the soil from being completely battered with heavy rain, so they should be just fine  :D

My local online weather station is currently reporting the soil temperature as 7C, which has to be regarded as a ball-park figure even though it is located only a few hundred yards away from me.

However, assuming it's something like correct,  THIS site gives an indication of how soil temperature affects germination times and success rate (7C is 45F)

I've never had parsnips germinate outdoors in less than 3 weeks, but on a positive note they've never failed to eventually come up either.  :)

I have a brand new raised bed in my back garden and have been dithering about planting anything out for the last 2 days, we actually have a small amount of sun here for the last 2 days but still worried about more torrential rain forecast for the next 4 days!

I did sow some Fothergill Harlequin F1 carrots yesterday in a huge tub and then plonked the hole lot in the cheap plastic covered grow house I have,  felt a bit more confident in them germinating in there than I did outside.

I must get something in the new bed soon though, I have some onion sets that I will put in later today and loads of beetroot seedlings sown indoors in a seed tray, that will be fun! I must get mu spuds in today as well, I thought I was miles behind but the guy in the local garden centre reassured me yesterday, he told me not to worry and people seem to be starting earlier and earlier every year so I felt a bit better then :)

The wain is wonderful - it's the warmth we need to get those seeds on their way.

My carrots are thinking about it too.  ::)

My finger tests on the soil down the plot today said very wet and not too cold. The khol rabi and turnips are showing, the beetroot not so. The salad leaves have shown and stopped as has the first sowing of carrots but the parsnips are getting their act together. The peas are showing really well in the guttering and the broad beans that went in later seem to be getting their act together.

So it looks as if seeds have a good chance of germinating. So long as we don't get a week of frost and snow.
