Cauli catastrophe
« on: April 19, 2012, 20:37 »
I am now on my second attempt at growing cauli all year round from seed. They seem to be on a suicide mission! I have started them in compost in divided seed trays 3 per section in the greenhouse and I have been only watering when they need it.

What am I doing wrong?  ???
Yer Tiz!!

It might help if we knew precisely what happened to them!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They appear to have just wilted. They only have thier first leaves and they were started on the March 23rd.

It sounds like damping off, but you say you're not overwatering.

It could be that they're getting too hot, brassicas detest heat and on the occasions the sun comes out the greenhouse gets very hot.

ive just sown this variety a few days ago so nothing to see yet, ive not grown caulis before so hope they do ok.
to much heat would be most obvious if its not lac of or over watering.
these 2 take all my time, whatever is left the veggies get, poor hubby is at the end of the queue.

I have one of those patio Greenhouses aswell which i use for hardening off I will move them into that and leave the flap open.

Cheers D.D.

Brasicas have it in for me. I put in 24 cabbages and cuali plants I bought the end of last summer and I ended up with 3 cabbages the rest just came to nothing forming no hearts.

Where are you sowing them? Brassicas have no place in the house it's far to warm my early sowings at the end of Feb start of March get germinated in a cold greenhouse then there outside to fend for themselves anything sown after early march is sown in modules on staging outside.

Try putting them outside in the day and in you patio greenhouse at night for a few days then get them out in the open.
Faff free zone!

The patio greenhouse is fairly shaded so i have moved them into there and we will see how it goes.

Thank you all.

Bit of a nightmare at the moment we are have the builders in and they have decided that the greenhouse would make for good storage for cement.

This is exactly what happened to all my brassica seedlings.
I'm growing them in my utility now and they seem to be ok there - have got their first real leaf now. It's not as light in there as the greenhouse but it is a more constant temperature and seems to be ok.

i've left mine directly outside. both cauli and cabbage have grown their 1st set of leaves and they're doing fine come rain or cold. they were in the small greenhouse to start them off from seed but after that they were outside.

Starting mine in pots but in the unheated grow house, I have gone for a mini cauliflower called Candid CHarm and a sweetheart type cabbage called Dutchman F1 sue to lack of bed space, not decided on the sprouts yet......

My first year growing anything ::)
I put mine on the windowsill, then into a cold frame when they showed and then outside in a walled area weeks ago and they look brilliant(As far as I can tell).
I just followed the advice on here,mostly from DD..What a guy! :D
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)
