It is odd. Something must have gone wrong for the egg to remain inside. I am glad the chick is OK but it must have been very unpleasant for the hen (who died) when the chick pecked its way out of the shell inside  :(

Oh Helen, I didn't hear that bit... I guess they just reported on the good news piece. Poor hen.  :(

Well this is the kind of quirk that is evolution! In this case the mother died but it is easy to imagine that if it had survived who knows if it is the beginning of a new species!

But if the chicken had a defective preen gland that produced watery, oily stuff that the chick then discovered it could drink for nourishment...
