Even down here in the mild south west, I wouldn`t bother sowing carrots after the end of June, as they come to nothing.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I've (very) successfully sown AK in July, but I wouldn't push it any futher.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Glad you're there to put me right DD! Sorry all!
I know AK shouldn't be planted in Autumn (says so on the tin!) and don't know why I said it.....too late at night......brain dead......but isn't it best to sow an early variety now because they crop quickly?

from what little i uderstand the carrot fly only can fly around 8" aove the ground i have some in soil and some in  1ft square containers -

It's a myth that carrot fly don't fly above a certain height. I know people who grow in large drums on a raised bed and they are up to 5' high and they still have had problems with carrot fly
Envormesh is a good solution but there is also a spray which has proven very good, called Garlic Wonder, available online
I works on the same theory as planting garlic next to your carrots, I guess the fly don't like garlic

Maybe it was just the conditions, but I sowed AK in September and they overwintered very well to give a useful crop. (Further south of course  :) )

from last year's diary

August 24th: Heavy rain has washed the seedlings away on the allotment

Sowed more carrots in tubs, in the garden this time,

So yes, we do get away with later sowing in the South  :D

Carrot fly will not eat your carrots. They have either not germinated yet or something else has had them.

But yes,uYou will need very fine mesh to stop carrot fly.

Yes but they dry out very fast and you have to keep them moist at all times
It's one way to control the water so they don't get too much from the rain and split

I don't know about you guys but I find the seasons are changing and moving round, which then means that I am sowing the first batches later but then the later batches are also being able to get a later batch sown
Saying that, I now have 3 batches of carrots sown and are up already. Late Feb, Mid March and early april. I did however cover them all with polythene to keep them warm until they germinated

I always grow Carrot Amsterdam Forcing carrots

I grow mine in 10inch pots.
This variety does not seem to attract carrot fly (and growing in pots helps).
I have suffered many years ago when I grew another variety in the past and just at ground level.
I sow these from Feb and will be picking some small ones early May and larger ones from June.
I sow every 3 weeks up to end July and get a good crop for last picking end of Sept.
I also grow Autumn King in July for picking up till Dec.

can you put autumn carrots in the same place as early carrots
