i'm very short on space and if i read the spaces i need between each planting i wouldn't be able to grow much.

for onions, i risk planting them 4 inches between and each row is 4" apart. i do the deweeding always by hand as i don't have a hoe. nutrients wise i soak groworganic fertilizer in water and give a diluted feed once a month and water everyday if i can on dry days. onions sizes have been good. some big, some not so. growing by seeds this year so inertested to see the results.

I saw this mentioned at the Eden Project last time I went there.

Using the same spacing, farmers in Cornwall found that planting 4 sets at a station, gave a greater yield.

The onions were smaller, but you got four of them.

Will that work with four onions raised from seed this year, and therefore still 'biro refill' size then DD?

I don't see why not!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You could always use them as companion plants...

Thanks DD - we didn't have the 'Patch' the last time we sowed onions from seed, and they were so feeble back then on the smaller garden we have at home.

I like that idea, as there's only two of us now, and frankly, we don't need too use a three-pounder onion each time now!

One of the reasons I liked the four -in-a-bunch idea too.

Mind you, tbh I didn't have that many three pound onions  :nowink:

I like them, especially when it comes to soup.

One of the recipes I follow calls for a kilo of onions.

This becomes, "Take one onion".

Those huge Marshalls onions can be big beasts - we managed them one year (after getting another mortgage to pay for them), but they were very good!

Maybe next year...;0)
