Planting brassica plug plants
« on: April 16, 2012, 19:09 »
Hi,

I'm a little confused if you can plant out brassica pug plants now, including sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, turnips. They are currently in a cold frame.

Can anyone put me straight please.

You can but you will need to give protection still, in case you get a frost
Make sure you harden them off

If they are in a cold frame they will be fine planted out --- they are tough  :D

My brassica seedlings stand up to frost without any harm

They should be fine Donnay, they're tougher than you think, but make sure they're hardened off first.

Even a net over them (probably a necessity), will give them a little protection anyway

When you say harden them off, they are in a cold frame that's very old with plenty of gaps. Is a cold frame the way you harden them off??

Sorry my first year!!

Normally you would harden off by putting plants out during the day and back in under cover at nigth for a while, so they get used to the big outdoors.

If your cold frame is all gaps, they are probably already quite hardened off, but you would do this for a couple of days just to make sure.

You will need to cover them with netting to keep pigeoms off and butterflies from laying eggs, and that will give them a tiny bit of protection against bitter winds when you first pu them out.

Plant them in firmly, as they don't like 'fluffy' soil

Hope that helps  :D

Yes that's great, thanks.

I think I will take them home to harden off. if I leave them out and they are not planted when I go back to put them away I have a feeling they may not be there!!
