What food should I give now!?
« on: April 15, 2012, 22:57 »
I have my 6 girls and they are around 15 weeks old.

The farmer said they will come in to lay at around 24 weeks... I am currently feeding growers pellets.

Now I have a feeling one of my Cotswold Legbars will soon come into lay. She has a much bigger comb and wattles then the rest. I have Layers pellets at the ready but how do I stop the rest eating the layers and stick to their growers?

I was told to keep them on growers intill them come into lay!  :(

If they are pure breeds about 24 weeks on sounds about right for laying, but if your legbar looks like she is nearly ready, although its a bit early, there is nothing wrong with putting them onto layers pellets.  Do it gradually though so you don't waste your growers pellets.  add some layers each time to the growers until your growers have finished, then put them onto layers full time.

They will be fine.  We put ours onto layers at about 16 weeks anyway.

Thank you Annie,

Four of the six are Hybrids but the breeder says that they are not bread to give a maximum yeald of eggs. The Cotswold Legbars are bread for the blue egg gene (look very much like a Cream Legbar) and the Burford Browns for their dark brown eggs...

It's just Dalia (the most devoleped) has become very noisy and her comb and wattles are really impressive now. I will get a photo of her up... You can see what you think then.

This Friday the legbars and Sussex's will be 16 weeks old and the two Browns will be 15.

is your growers medicated or not - if not you will be fine but you cannot eat eggs laid by a hen fed on medicated feed.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have a cream legbar and she lays a sage green egg. She is pure bred and I think they can come in varying shades of green/blue. My cream legbar lays a blue egg. It can be the luck of the draw :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

No medicated feed, though I do have to give them all a dose of Fluben within the next week!

I will continue to feed growers pellets then when the first comes into lay I'll mix it 50/50 with layers till all the growers is finished.
