Joined this site just to say thank you. I live in France and parsnips are not always available and when they are can be a tad expensive. Growing my own is therefore essential. Well this year the slugs ate all my seedlings. What to do as I only had a packet of last years gladiator seeds left in the tin. So followed your experiment and success now have 30 parsnips growing. So thank you again and what a great site  :D

Nice to hear from you picon, welcome to the site and good luck with your 'snips  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well you live and learn! I didn't know that you're supposed to have fresh parsnip seed every year. As I had some left in the packet from last year I just sowed them outdoors in my allotment. They've come up really well and my wife and I were only saying the other day that they are looking much healthier than last year despite the awful weather. 8)

Due to weather and probably slugs / snails, I have one seedlng showing. Am I too late to sow some more?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If you're OK with small parsnips, why not go for it and sow a bit closer together than you would if you were expecting 12" roots?

The other recommendation is not using old carrot seeds, I always use the old stuff first and they grow. It might be a reduction in germination over time, but as you were going to throw them away if you listened to the advice, sowing them thickly doesn't matter.
I must admit I always use new seed for parsnips but that stops Now.
