Keeping the cat off the veg patch
« on: April 14, 2012, 09:54 »
My cat is determined to dig up every part of my veg patch in the garden.

I have several raised beds & have tried using fleece raised up at the corners to keep the cat off. This has worked but it means there is a lot of messing about just to check on the plants growing underneth. I have also noticed that the fleece appears to make it lovely and cosy for the weeds & slugs :-(

What would other suggest I use to keep the cat off but making it easy to keep an eye on the plants.  I have thought about mesh like for peas.

Ta
Happiness is trying something new even if it doesnt work.

Over the years I've tried everything.

http://www.contech-inc.com/products/scarecrow/ <-- this is the only thing that has worked.

Is he digging for the sake of it or toileting there? If toileting then is there an area set  aside he can easily use. I usually tie string to small old bits of bamboo and stretch it across each row I've planted and the cats pretty much leave them alone. Cd's tied to string glinting in the sun can also put them off. Cats apparently don't like citrus smells so you could place orange peels etc over your beds and see if that helps. They would need replacing regulary though.

We have made a cage with soft netting against cats, Bella dog who cleans up after cats :tongue2:  and pigeons. We worried about birds getting stuck, but it hasn't happened. The sparrows and blackbirds can get in and out through a gap where it joins the fence, but pigeons are too dim and cats would have to negotiate a very prickly climbing rose. We just lift it up and secure it to itself with a couple of pegs when we want to go in there.

Of course, sometimes someone sneaks in behind me and gets stuck! :D Peace at last!

That's what I've done this year, mainly to keep the sparrers off but it will keep the cats off as well. Result  :D

Moth balls can be very harmful to cats.
