sprouts stopped growing
« on: April 13, 2012, 18:59 »
I set some sprout seed in a seed tray in an unheated greenhouse a month ago. They were away like lightning, but after about three weeks, they seemed to stop putting any timber on. They are about 3/4" high and look fit and well.

I was wondering if the seed tray was deep enough for them Matt? Would I be better putting them outside?

Yes in theory brassicas are fine to be planted out now - aslong as they have been hardened off.

Although i usually only plant them out when they are a couple of inches tall. so if i where you i'd leave them in the unheated greenhouse for a while longer (around a week) then start to harden them off.

i sow mine in cells/trays and then transplant them in their own individual pots then later plant down at the allotment.

Plant them deeper when transplanting.

Find it helps avoid more of the bugs down at the site and is another bed that is easier to keep weed free before putting in their final positions. I used to suffer couch grass too so it made the plants stronger and able to withstrand problems better

I do the same gazza, as I can control things better that way, and make sure I have ground available at the right time too.

I don't plant them out until they are strong plants: I would think that ART's ones are a bit small for planting out yet, at 3/4 inch

However, they could be out outside if you need the space ART --- they will be fine :)
