Bald Bum
« on: April 12, 2012, 20:58 »
Hi my 28week old Ancona has a bald bum The feathers look 'plucked' but I have not seen her or the other hens or cock pecking her In fact she is quite bossy. Her bum looks red and sore but is not bleeding She is eating and laying each day  Any suggestions (I am new to keeping poultry but have a clutch of 5 pure breeds and a Welsummer cockerel)  Thanks in advance

Check for external parasites.

Use purple spray on her bald bum if it is clean, this will aid healing and stop others pecking her sore skin until her feathers grow back.  :)

One of my Silver Sussex, Anastasia has a bald bum at the moment!
She's being henpecked by a grumpy Blue Marans called Gertie.
It's a shame - she's almost looking ready for the oven!! :D

Hopefully my anti-peck spray will arrive today and i'll pop up and spray the lot of them.
I ordered mine online. Just search for anti-pecking spray.

Purple spray is an antibacterial spray and different from an anti peck spray.  This is the one I bought from our local suppliers.

www.millbryhill.co.uk/equestrian-530/horse-health-grooming-585/first-aid-veterinary-products-611/purple-general-products-30493.htm

As you can see it is usually in the Equestrian section of your local farm suppliers.   :)

The one I've ordered does both.
It also contains the anti-bacterial agents needed to'soothe and disinfect superficial grazing'.

Can you put a link up or the name of the product as it will be helpful for other members who don't want to buy 2 lots of spray.   ;)

I've bought Nettex Anti- Feather-pecking spray.
Ordered it from ilikechickens.co.uk - I'm allowed to put that aren't I?

I chose it because it does both and Anastasia's botom looks pretty tender! It advertises it's 'foul tasting' and should stop pecking after 1-2 days.

Will report back if it works. Have just been for a walk up to the plot and sprayed the ladies and let me tell you it absolutely STINKS!!!

We now have 10 grumpy stinky girls!! :D

Hi again  I rang my vet & explained the prob  She said to save me the consulation fee she would prepare some antibiotic injections for me to pick up which I did on Sat (£4.00 for 3)  One every 2 days  I also bought some antibacterial spray and use that.  She still seems as lively & bossy as ever and is still laying, though of course I have had to bin her eggs, so we will watch this space....

I don't understand why the vet has prescribed antibiotics for a case of feather plucking especially as there is no sign of blood or infection. Fitting a beak clip to the bully would stop any feather plucking, purple spray would ensure she wasn't showing any redness and no eggs wasted.
What antibiotics did the vet prescribe - especially without them seeing the bird?

Sprayed 2 of the girls again today as still look bald and Gertie is still pecking them from time to time. Says to spray them every 3-5 days so today would be the 4th day after.

However we gave them a small bale of staw today and they had hours of fun tearing it apart - no pecking then so I'm thinking it must be bordom.
We hid canary seed amongst the straw too - they loved it! :D

Well it is a very rural community  & the Vets is mainly a 'farm' vet.  I have a 40 mile round trip  so it is not cost effective every time a chicken is ill.  I tel her the symptons and, if she thinks I need anti biotics, she leaves them at reception so I can pick up on a sturday when I am in town.  The antibiotic is Bilosin  though I am not sure what diffenece that makes?  Cheers

My girl is still looking very bald!

Any idea how long the feathers take to grow back?
I'm also thinking that Gertie has developed a taste for stinky anti-peck spray!!!

At least Anastasia doesn't look sore - just bald!! :tongue2:
