Parsnips, 4 weeks on still nowt?
« on: April 12, 2012, 20:34 »

Our parsnip seeds have been in the ground for over 4 weeks now, and there's still nothing showing.....

This year we decided to try seed tapes, as my dad did last year had fantastic results!  :tongue2:

People say they take an age to germinate, but THIS long, surely there should be at least some signs of life by now??

Doubt it has been mild enough for them

Remember one year it took them well over that but they still actually germinated well. I was lucky last year by putting them in eary and we had really mild early spring so they came up great

Patience I think. Mine are just showing today after just over 3 weeks but they are under a cloche. Yours will show in another week or so I guess as there has been some cold nights that will have slowed them down.

I've given up sowing parsnip seeds until May due to slow germination earlier in the year. They soon catch up!

MAY!!??

Back in March, one guy said 'if they don't go in now, it'll be too late later on to sow them!'

Mine are going in this weekend.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If they haven't showed by now, there is little chance they will
Parsnips are temper-mental. You need fresh seeds each year ideally
They can also be prown to rot

I sow mine on their side to prevent this

Mine are not in yet, but due soon.

I also have sown in May the last two years.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If your weather has been anything like it has been here they have probably had a couple of weeks of warm weather followed by a a couple of weeks of cold - they are never in a great hurry at the best of times - what I would do is go for the "belt and braces" approach and sow 3-4 seeds at about 8" intervals parallel to where your existing seeds are; you can always pull out any excess seedlings.)

(P.S. - yet to sow mine yet!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Is that really you Carrot Man? Where have you been?

You must have more patience than me to plant parsnip seeds on their sides. There again I suppose they are part of the family.
