If they haven't germinated in about 4 weeks they probably won't.
On my plot, on the lower half I can't seem to get root seeds to germinate. In my square beds at the top where the soil is finer they seem to sprout.

Give them time, but not too much time.

Do you give any attention to moon planting???

I think you know I didn't mean that - it may help :D

Wouldn't give you any guarantees though ;)

Try covering them as the temp. may not be sufficient for them to germinate
Take a look at my blog and you will see my carrots in my raised bed
I believe it is the globe under my picture

I don't think that is too bad considering it is a bit colder up where you are
In fact I think it's pretty good
Did you cover them or just sowed in the open and left them?

Sowed in the open and not covered. Watered the bottom of the drill before sowing as very dry. An inch of rain a week ago and April showers since is just what we needed.

sorry to hijack this thread but - how long does it take from seed to harvest when it comes to carrots? - as i would like to enter them in my local august show! :)

Have a look on the back of the packe Matt, as some say in days, others you need to use the little coloured sowing and harvesting chart to work it out.

Depends on the carrot -- some are quicker than others

I suspect it is just too cold for them to germinate
It is unusual they all fail for any other reason

I've just been and looked at mine after two weeks away with work and a holiday - and they haven't germinated yet, sown 2 weeks ago, I had fleeced them but the fleece blew off during the heavy winds.  No weeds have germinated in that raised bed either, but plenty elsewhere on the plot!!  I'm hoping it's just been too cold since they went in, although it was very warm when we actually sowed them! I have put the fleece back and  hope they start to come through soon.

You are not so far from me, Dopey, and mine have taken three weeks to show.

I have watered them carefully (pouring water from a bottle into the soil directly alongside the rows, to avoid the soil 'panning' over the top) as we have had so little rain.

I also soaked the drills very thoroughly, pre-sowing, then pulled in a small amount of dryer fine soil, sowed the seeds, covered with fine dry soil and tamped it down gently.

You could try scraping some soil away to see if any are germinating -- htye may of course have germinated and then died, or, as you said possibly rotted.

imho best to sow some more -- it's not been that cold really, just very very dry

Good idea I will give the soil a scrape, and see if any have germinated or not, tbh I would have preferred them to have failed, its only since i came here I learnt that I should have preped the soil better than i did for them to grow and not be disfigured, I just scraped the top of and put them in, but should have pereped the soil at least 6 inch deep

Yep, that's true, so you have saved yourself some massively forked carrots a while along there
