Is this Gapeworm?
« on: April 12, 2012, 10:50 »
Hi - newbie question.
The first day I got my girls one of them did that wide open mouth thing a few times during the day, as if she was trying to shout but no sound came out. Most odd. I've watched my girls closely and haven't seen her do it again. This is now a week later. Should I worm them or do you think it may have just been stress form the move? What do you think? They seem healthy and eating well.

Best to worm them with Flubenvet just in case.

Thanks kegs, I'll go to pet shop and get some now. Oh just a thought One of my birds - the ISA eats SO much more than the others. She will get a larger dose. Does that master or should I separate her?

she could have had a bit of food stuck and was pushing it down, however if you worm them all then at least you know they have been done and will know when to do them again.
Often if a hen has gape worm you can open their beak and look down their throats to see them. Some people then hook the worm out with a feather but worming with flubenvet is best as this will also kill any other worms.
Staffies are softer than you think.

It sounds as if she was just "adjusting" food in her crop. They do that sometimes, especially when they have wolfed down some treats too fast. So after you have wormed them (which is a good idea anyway) and you see them doing it again, dont worry it's perfectly normal.

Also check for canker in the mouth as 2 of mine have had it. Lost one but second holding on but unable to eat well. I thought gape worm at frirst but when I looked in mouth I could see the fungus growth quite clearly. Signs were gaping mouth and dribbling when eating. Hope your hen gets better.
