Greenhouse shading
« on: April 11, 2012, 22:40 »
Hello everyone, me again  ::)

Does anyone use a good greenhouse shading product that can be clipped up on the inside of the greenhouse. What about greenhouse blinds?

What do you use and where do you buy it from.

Thanks in advance

I use bubblewrap inside all year round, warmer in winter and refracts the light so in summer there's no scorching.

Tomatoes seem to like a bright hot greenhouse, whereas cucumbers seem to like it a bit shadier and more humid and shade seems to help.
My mate has 2 greenhouses on his plot - one for toms and one for cucumbers - the cucumber one is always shaded.

I've had little luck growing the 2 together in one greenhouse.

Toms have done well however with peppers and cape gooseberries.

Even up here I have to shade my tomatoes, they wilt otherwise.

I go for the expensive option.

Diluted emulsion paint.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My plants were getting scorched last year and all I had to hand was white paint - painted the lower half of the large double glazed units and thought 'ooo thats good' - cant scrape it off but its a thin enough covering not to bother

just seen that DD - Diluted!!! what a wally I am

I know you can get like a powdered chalk, you add water to it, spray/paint it on, then just hose off when you dont need it any more

I have a brand new polycarbonate greenhouse so not to keen on using paint or lime. Chalk might not be to bad if it hoses off but would prefer shading made from some sort of material.

I use a 12ft. length of debris netting that I clip with plastic clothes pegs to the roof and sunny side glazing bars just below the opening lights on the outside of my G/H.Easy to put on and even easier to to rip off at the end of the season.     Bob.

You can buy specific greenhouse shading fabric. It's green softish small-meshed fabric and in cheap garden centres you can buy it from the metre.
Down in Devon and Cornwall you can get it from Trago for... I think I paid less than a pound a metre - it's a cheap ol' shop!

I use normal clothes pegs to attach it to the outside of my greenhouse - the metal bits stick upwards a bit more on the outside.

My small greenhouse is bubblewrapped, so that's for the cooler stuff, but I had some greenhouse shading come with it when MIL gave it to us, and I use that in the bigger greenhouse to shade the tomatoes a bit.

If necessary, I also have some debris netting that my friend Joyfull kindly gave me!   :) :)

Old net curtains are good too!  ;)

Go to the local boot sale, get yourself a couple of net curtains for a quid, run a string from top corner to corner on each side and thread the curtains on. When its bright, draw the curtains and when you dont need them just open them up. Easist, and cleanest way.
