Grow pots for Courgettes and Squash
« on: April 11, 2012, 09:42 »
I wondered if I can use tomato and cucumber grow pots to grow courgettes and squash? Or is it just because tomatoes have a long root run that the grow pots are used?

With the hose pipe ban I want to conserve all the water I can and the idea of watering around the plants instead of random watering appeals. I can use upside down bottles however the foxes (at least I presume that is who is doing it) seem to like digging them up and chucking them about. The integral 'moat' in the grow pots would be a real benefit.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

If you put a short cane down through the bottle it seems to stop the varmints from moving them  :D It 'werks fer me' and it's a lot cheaper than buying more growpots ;)

I've tried growing squash and courgettes in containers and whilst it worked to a degree I will try to avoid it in the future because of the heavy watering requirements. They are thirsty plants in the summer and unless you can water them plentifully the pots dry out quickly.

if this isn't a problem for you them it sounds a good idea  :)

Use the DIY newspaper pots, you put the seeds in it grows, you then plant it with the paper still on (and then your not disturbing any roots) and by burying it with the newspaper, the paper with soak and water you then give it, so its a double benefit, that's what im doing anyway, it all helps a little in the drought
If Its Not Growing... Its Dead.

Paper pots are good for sowing in BUT they can't take the place of 'growpots' like these

for watering can they?
That's what the OP was talking about  ;)

Never tried squashes but I've successfully grown courgettes in large pots for several years. Yields were amazing but they do require a lot of water, even with a big dollop of muck in the bottom of the pot. I place mine in a cut down plastic drum and just fill that with water.
