Hello, i am a little confused whether this right!  Could anyone tell me?  O.k, chives and spring onions can produce other bulbs underground, as well as seed.  And onions have to seed to produce another bulb.  Is that right?

Not nececelery!   Take shallots for example.   You pop in a single shallot and hey presto by autumn you have five, six or seven shallots all neatly clustered round the original bulb.

Chives can form a clump just by dividing themselves, whereas spring onions and onions only form one bulb per plant. As Klefti says, shallots are different because each bulb will divide into between 4 and 8 new bulbs during the growing season.

They can all produce seed too though (quite prolifically, not to mention often far and wide in the case of chives!!)

There are also Welsh onions that divide themselves, similar in growth to chives but big enough to pull some off as spring onions.
