New to allotment holding
« on: April 09, 2012, 20:34 »
Hi All, Albeit I have always had an healthy interest in backyard gardening having taken early retirement 18 months ago I have taken an allotment in south Lincolnshire.
I have a question which one of you maybe able to help with regarding identifying the variety of seed potatoes a fellow allotment holder gave me today, 3.5KG of small seed potatoes ( oval 1.5" long smooth skin )stating that they were salad potatoes and needed to be planted about 3" deep and 6"apart for cropping in August
 Any ideas would be helpful.

Welcome to the forums.

They sound very much like Charlotte.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

hi abbeyview and welcome to the site - unfortunately there are lots of salad pots and they most of them look the same  - but at an educated guess i would say charlotte - as that is a smoothed skinned variety and also a very popular one too.

I plant so there's at least 3" soil above the spud. A bit more won't hurt.

Charlotte is a second early and these I plant 15" apart.

(12" first early, 15" second early, 18" maincrop - rows 24" apart).
