sowing sweetcorn

Is it ok to sow sweetcorn now indoors and then later on move it out to a unheated greenhouse?

And your location is? It would help if you could put it in your profile please, it will make a difference to the answer.

Here in the midlands, I'm looking around the end of this month.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My sweetcorn 'Applause F1' are just poking their noses out of the compost in the coffee cups in the unheated greenhouse.    Thanks for reminding me to pop a plastic sheet over them for the night.    :)    Cheers,      Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Mine went in today in an unheated greenhouse.  They will however be fleeced over every night.

You'll be fine sowing in a couple of weeks but I do like to harvest my corn as early as possible and they will be mollycoddled and brought back into the house if there are severe frosts

Just put my seeds in a old ice-cream tub with damp kithen cloth in the bottom in a dark warm cupboard. They will germinate in a week'ish then pot them up for 2 weeks and move to my cold g'house in another 2 weeks, get almost 100% success

Please don't leave them that long, if the temp's higher, they will have sprouted in 2 days.

You won't gain anthing by sowing now, I'm in south yorkshire and they'll get planted in deep paper pots on the 1st of May in the unheated greenhouse the same as they would if I living back in Windsor or Edinburgh. My courgettes, winter squash, pumpkins and outdoor cucumbers will get sown at the same time, don't rush things absolutely no need I put my first tomato seeds in on the 2nd of April (I only grow outdoor toms) I bet I have red toms the same time as those that have sown in Febuary.

Off to start chitting the first batch of sweetcorn seeds right now.

There is certainly no need to put them somewhere dark. Mine will be in a plastic takeaway container with the lid on and put in front of the television to remind me to keep checking for chits.

Each seed will be planted in a paper pot as soon as a chit is visible.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I did not think very hard before planting mine. I did half mid March and the rest last week.

Luckily I planted in those paper type pots in my porch. I used the small pots so guess I will have to keep moving into bigger posts every few weeks till around May time.

I sowed two varieties in 3" pots yesterday. I bought two packets of seed before discovering different supersweet varieties shouldn't be grown together (but I learnt a lesson so it's all good!). So the plan is to grow one variety at the allotment and see how the other variety copes in planter bags in our back garden.
When the leaves start showing we'll take the plants over to the plot and pop them in the polytunnel until they're ready to put in the ground.
I thought it was a bit early still but then we flicked through some photos of the plot from last year and by the end of April we had most things growing in the ground, so fingers crossed it'll all be fine.

Last year we were lucky.

A couple of years ago, it would have been wipeout!
