Anyone know of an automatic feeder?
« on: October 25, 2007, 13:17 »
Now that the clocks are about to go back it will soon be dark when I get back from work and my girls will be tucked up in bed before I am there to give them their corn!  They have layers pellets available in their run at all times and I normally give them a handful of corn each before they go into the coop at night, this works really well and they reward me with eggs each day.  Does anyone know of a timed feeder, the sort that you get for dogs and cats, that I can put the corn in and set a timer for it to open at a set time like 3 pm?  If one is available do you think the chickens would use it?  I have found browsing this forum really helpful as I am a newbie to chicken keeping. many thanks for any help you can offer.
Teresa.
Wish I was at home with the chickens!

Thanks Munty that looks great and would work just as well as the fancy one we bought!!!!!!!!!  What I was hoping to find for the corn was one of those ones you see for dogs and cats, only bigger, the sort that have a timer on them and at the set time the lid would pop up and they would be able to have their corn (if I let them have free access to the corn I don't think they would eat their layers pellets and I would really miss my lovely eggs).  Has anyone tried using one of these?  I can imagine they are not cheap and don't want to waste my money if they won't go near it.

Thanks, Teresa

why not use a cat feeder and set it for the next day when you get home from work here there is one called a C10 part way down the page for £17.95 can't imagine they would be scared of it for more than 10mins, mine are always super curious about anything new.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Something like that would be great for me too -  they're tucked up in bed by the time I get home, and I want them to eat pellets, not just corn....
If I take the plunge before you do I'll let you know how it works out.
